As winter settles over Vermont and snow blankets the hills of Barnard, Vermont, there’s a quiet magic that fills Twin Farms. Fires glow, the pace slows and the season invites moments of warmth, connection and play. Our Wine Director and Sommelier, Ryan Bogdan, has curated a selection of wines that capture this spirit with bottles that bring comfort, character and depth to every winter gathering.

Riesling to Begin the Evening
Few varietals surprise as much as Riesling. Too often misunderstood as purely sweet, it can also be crip, dry and electric with acidity. When out and about and enjoying a meal, look to begin the night with this. From Germany to New York’s Finger Lakes, Riesling’s versatility makes it a perfect pairing for the season.
“Pair it with everything! From your elegant appetizers, onto richer meats and then delicate desserts and find out just the depth and complexity it has,” says Ryan.
Ryan recommends the Element Winery “IOE” Riesling 2022, crafted by Master Sommelier Chris Bates. This wine bursts with white peach, lime leaf and green apple, alongside hints of beeswax and stony minerality.
“On the palate, the wine is fresh, zippy and electric, with crisp mouthwatering acidity and a fresh, bone-dry finish.” – Chris Bates M.S., who will host an intimate winter weekend on The Farm December 12–13. Join us to enjoy guided tastings, behind-the-scenes stories from his winemaking journey and an unforgettable exploration of cool-climate wines from New York’s Finger Lakes.
Cabernet Franc: The Winter Underdog
Known as the quiet sibling to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc is having its all-star moment. Popular for its elegant structure and savory depth, it reveals layers of black cherry, bell pepper and earthy spice, an ideal pairing for the heartier dishes of winter.
“Pair it alongside seasonally spiced squash, rich stews and soups or with a plate of cheese and charcuterie,” says Ryan.
Ryan’s pick, Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon “Les Grézeaux”, is crafted by hand from organically farmed, old vines planted in 1975. The result is a wine of remarkable texture and length, balancing dark fruit with subtle minerality.
Syrah: A Known Favorite
Syrah is a grape with a global presence, from the Barossa Valley of Australia to the Rhône Valley of France and down to the Swartland of South Africa. Few wines feel as tailor-made for winter as Syrah. It carries notes of dark fruit, spice and floral perfume, perfectly paired with chocolate desserts.
Ryan suggests the Auguste Clape “Le Vin des Amis Rouge”, a Rhône-style Syrah that feels like velvet and is perfect for sharing among good friends.
